We’re always looking for talent

We are always looking for inquisitive, creative scientists across the disciplinary spectrum to join the team. We have multiple ongoing projects from technology development to neural circuit studies and thus have a wide range of opportunities available in engineering, data science, neurophysiology, and beyond. All interested candidates can contact Daniel.

Prospective PhD Students

We primarily recruit PhD students entering the graduate Biomedical Engineering Program, but also consider students in the Neuroscience Graduate Program. The BME program is direct admission, meaning Principal Investigators directly admit applicants into their laboratories. The neuroscience program has a select committee that admits applicants, and students rotate in multiple labs their first 1-2 semesters. Prospective applicants should refer to the relevant program for academic admission requirements.

To join the Gonzales Lab, a background in microfabrication, engineering design, or neuroscience is preferred, but not required. Primarily, we look for scientists that are eager to learn and take on new, exciting challenges. Interested students are welcome to contact Daniel anytime for more information about the lab, potential projects, and whether we are accepting students this cycle. Please include:

  • A CV

  • Brief description of your educational and research background

  • Brief description of your interest in pursuing a PhD in the Gonzales Lab.

You can refer to this blog, for more advice on applying to PhD programs and reaching out to PI’s. Please note that I receive multiple emails per day (especially in the Fall) regarding admission into the lab. My response time may be slow and I typically do not have the time to meet with candidates in advance of the application deadline. However, you are free to let me know you will be applying and I will be sure to keep an eye out for your application. You can also list my lab in your application as one of high interest and I will review it carefully. Our committee will create a shortlist of candidates who are invited for either in-person visits to campus (domestic applicants) or virtual interviews (international applicants). These invitations are typically sent out by early January and the visit takes place in March. Within this 3 month window, I am happy to meet with shortlisted candidates interested in the lab in advance of the formal interviews.

Prospective Postdocs

There are no formal postdoc openings or job posts at the moment, but we’re always open to recruiting talented postdoctoral researchers. Previous experience can take many forms including brain-computer interfaces, in vivo/in vitro recordings or stimulation, optical engineering, micro- or nano-fabrication, animal studies, and computational neuroscience. However, as with other positions we are more interested in your readiness to learn new skills and take on new challenges. Interested candidates can contact Daniel anytime to discuss potential opportunities in the Gonzales Lab in addition to general advice for finding the right lab for your postdoc.

Please include

  • A CV

  • Brief description of your educational and research background

  • Relevant publications

  • Brief description of your interest in pursuing a postdoc in the Gonzales Lab

  • Brief description of your long-term research vision.

Prospective Undergraduates

We are always looking for talented undergraduates to provide critical research support in the lab and develop their own research skills. Undergraduates are paired with a PhD student or postdoc as their primary mentor. Some common undergraduate research opportunities in the Gonzales Lab are: animal care, reagent management, performing basic surgical procedures, animal behavioral training, designing experimental apparatuses, analyzing data, and cleanroom support. Undergraduates who demonstrate exceptional dedication and consistency in the lab over a period of 6-12 months are given additional opportunities for independent projects and expanding into more skillful experimental procedures. Interested candidates can contact Daniel anytime to discuss potential opportunities.

Please include:
